Equitable's Senior of the Month

"Celebrating Life with Cars, Family and Retirement."
March 2008
Equitable's Senior of the Month
Bob Baize

After more than 40 years driving trucks, Robert “Bob” Baize thought it was time to slow down - time to rest in the place he calls home and enjoy the sweetest parts of life: his family, friends and his toys.

Born in Medford, Oregon in 1936, Bob has always stayed close to his home town. He grew up in Medford and graduated from high school in Grants Pass. He started working when he was just 17 years old hauling logs, which he did for 10 years before continuing on to a career in the trucking industry. He spent 15 years delivering grains for Western Farmers, and then moved on to Far West Steel, and later to American Steel.

After years of driving trucks and traveling up and down the west coast, he was ready to settle down. He and his wife, Dona, had talked about retirement, but had not decided when they would actually do it. Then one day, he went to work, resigned, and went home to tell his wife what he had done. Shortly after leaving the trucking business, he took over the family’s investments and has handled them ever since. He says, “I’ve made more money being retired than I ever did while I was working. It was the best decision I made. Now I get to enjoy the good life.”

And that he does. Now Bob spends his time with his family, his friends and playing with his toys. Bob treasures his family the most. He and his wife, Dona, have now been happily married for over 48 years, and their four children have grown up and started their own families and careers. He loves to spoil his grandchildren every chance he gets and enjoys traveling to see them, even though some of them live in different states. He says, “Life would be miserable without them. Without family you have nothing.”

Bob has been retired for almost 12 years now, but that doesn’t mean he’s stopped moving. He still enjoys traveling, going to car shows, participating on several boards in the Applegate Community, and messing around on his ATVs and with his cars. His best traveling memory is his trip to Tonga where he dove with humpback whales. He has traveled all over the east coast, the Midwest, through Canada and into Mexico. In the past few years he has slowed down some because of how busy things are, but still runs around with his good friend to drag races, the Nitro-boat drags in Redding, and to fish..

An avid car buff, Bob is always open to go to a car show. He is the proud owner of both a 2001 Chevrolet Corvette, which pumps out 475 horsepower, and a 1956 Ford pick-up. He loves the home he and his wife have built, the area they live in, and the Oregon rain. Bob was nominated as this month’s Senior by his local Equitable agent, Bill Kaelin, his long time friend and neighbor.

Bob, it’s great to hear about someone who values family as much as we do at Equitable. Thank you for your hard work throughout the years and we are pleased to welcome you into the Equitable family!!
