"New Adventures at 82 "
May 2008
Naomi Head
After years of keeping house, raising kids and working, Naomi Bond has finally been able to sit back, relax and try new things. Some may think of being 82 as a roadblock for adventure, but Naomi has embraced her age and the opportunities retirement has presented.
Born in Galina, Oregon, Naomi was the sixth of eight children. Her parents owned a small farm and the children worked on it through grade school. There were no schools in her small town, so she rode to elementary school on horseback. After she got older, she moved in to town to attend high school. Where she also worked at the grocery store and lined with the store owners and cared for the owner’s children.
After Naomi graduated, she worked at a logging camp as a cook. A man by the name of AC Bond joined the crew and the two hit it off. They married in 1946 and had two beautiful boys, Andy and Monty. While the kids were growing up Naomi worked as a waitress and also helped her husband with his trucking business. It was her priority for her to send the boys to college and she made sure that happened. “It wasn’t an option for me, and I wanted to make sure my boys got that opportunity when the time came.”
Once the kids had graduated college, Naomi and her husband decided to go their separate ways. Since she had always liked Nevada, she picked up and found a nice home in Winnemucca. There, she worked in a local casino restaurant, but decided to retire when she turned 75.
Now, Naomi spends most of her time at home. She has really made her house an enjoyable place to be, stocked with her lifetime collection of teddy bears, a yard filled with gardens and flowers and a nice deck to sit back and relax on. When she is not tending to the yard or house, Naomi likes to sew and travel. She sews most of her own clothes and says “They are more durable and affordable than anything you can buy in the store.” Over the years she has traveled to the Caribbean, Mexico, and all over the U.S., including Alaska. On her 82nd birthday, Naomi’s son, Monty, planned a big vacation for her. Little did she know she wasn’t just taking a vacation; she was going on the snowmobiling adventure she had always been too busy to do in the past.
I was hesitant to go, but once I got in my snow outfit and got up the mountain I was a little more relaxed. I rode on the back for the first couple runs, but then my son convinced me to get on by myself and go. It was so much fun and I wondered why I hadn’t done it before now.” In fact, she thought it was so fun she took some friends back to Oregon to snowmobile again. She says that since the snow is melting, she may have to go back to Oregon this summer and tryjet-skiing for the first time. Naomi says that she lives her life one day at a time and she makes the most of each day. She became the Senior of the Month when she called in and shared her snowmobiling story with a representative. They were impressed by her sense of adventure and her bright, happy personality and figured she was a perfect candidate.
Naomi, we are proud to have you as a part of the Equitable Family and celebrate the exciting life you continue to live.
