"Retirement on the Horizon"

Early on, we work and raise our families, all while trying to build a home and nest egg for the golden years that follow. For Charles Miller those days are coming to an end and on the forefront is the rest, relaxation and travel that will come along with the 2010 summer and retirement.

Charles “Chuck” Miller was born on October 29, 1942 in Austin, Minnesota. He was the second child in his family, with an older brother and an adopted younger sister. Growing up he and his brother were very close and fought like little boys do. His brother was bigger, but luckily, Chuck was faster.

Charles started school in Minnesota, but when he was six the family packed up and moved west to Lebanon, Oregon. Chuck continued school in Oregon, and made his mark on the football field. His football talent led him to an athletic scholarship to the University of Oregon, were he graduated in 1966 with a degree in Education.

During his sophomore year of college, he and a friend were eating lunch when he bumped into a girl he knew from his high school. That girl, turned out to be the roommate of his future wife, Nancy. In August 1964, Charles and Nancy got married and have been together ever since. After graduation, the two signed a contract to teach for two years on the island of Guam. While teaching in Guam they ventured to the Philippines to vacation, then jumped over to Korea to adopt their first son.

When their contract ended in Guam, Chuck and Nancy moved back to the states to Corpus Christi, Texas. After the move, their small family expanded with the addition of three daughters and another son. It was a busy, full house, nothing was ever boring and the family made a lot of good memories together. Now, all their children have left the nest, started families of their own, and added twelve grandchildren to the Miller family album.

Chuck has always worked hard support his family. In the beginning he coached football and taught sixth grade, but then ventured out into the business world as a claims adjuster for an insurance company and then as a franchise manager for Farell’s Ice Cream. After eight years of ice cream, Charles sold the business and started managing coast to coast truck stops. It took twelve years of managing the Petro Stopping Centers, for Chuck to realize that he was ready to go back and teach again.

For the last nine years Chuck has been teaching Physical Education in Richmond, Texas, but retirement is not too far off. He is planning on leaving the work force for good on June 4th, 2010 so he can keep his seat in his easy chair warm, start checking things off on his Honey-Do List, perfect his golf game, travel and do whatever his heart desires.

After all those hard years of work and raising your family, you desire a little time to yourself and we hope that retirement allows you to do everything you ever wanted. Chuck, thank you for being a member of the Equitable Family!
