Consumer Fraud Alert
We have been made aware of an internet scam where a consumer would receive a check that appears to come from Equitable Life & Casualty Insurance Company in response to:
- A chance to receive a lottery or sweepstakes prize;
- Being a "mystery shopper" and getting paid to do so;
- A personal loan that has been approved;
- Contact with a person from a dating service asking for help; or
- A request from a "friend" on Facebook asking for help.
These are scams designed to get you to cash a fraudulent, counterfeit check . . . one that looks authentic enough to fool a bank teller. If you cash the bogus check you will end up losing your money – the bank will ultimately find out the check is fraudulent and you will owe the bank the money you received from cashing it.
These crooks want you to cash the check, enticing you to keep a portion of the funds for yourself and then have you send off the remaining amount to another person who is either within or, more likely, outside the United States. Once you find out the check was fraudulent the scammers are long gone and virtually impossible for you or anyone to track down.
These are commonly known as money transfer scams or counterfeit check scams; they are not new and often involve dramatic or convincing stories that play on your good nature, your emotions, or your wanting to help another who claims to be in desperate need. In reality these are criminal operations designed to cost you money as the victim of a fraudulent scheme.

We are cooperating with the state Attorney General's offices, the FBI, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and the Federal Trade Commission to put a stop to these scams and bring the criminals behind them to justice.
